Chapter Six

Again with the dull, gray walls and the scarred table. Again with the Keystone Kop routine. I waited, trying to look relaxed.

When the door opened, I was surprised to see neither Shiomi nor MacGuinty. It was a fresh-faced young woman I’d never seen before. She started and looked confused when she saw me.

I faked cheeriness. “Who were you looking for, dear?”

She blinked and adjusted her uniform collar. Then peered at the door number and looked puzzled.

“I was looking for Detective MacGuinty. He was supposed to be in here with a suspect.”

I grimaced, feeling my lips draw back.

“Squinty’s in here with me. Well, he was. I think he’s in his office or the break room. He’s trying to break me, you see.”

I smiled, widening my eyes to look innocent and a bit batty. She wiped a grin from her face at my nickname for the detective. I guess she didn’t like him either. Color me shocked.

“Sorry, Ma’am, I must have it wrong. He said he had a suspect.”

I sighed, weary of his macho, bull-headed, anti-trans bullshit. Before I could explain, Squinty came barging back in shoving the uniformed woman out of his way.

“What do you think you’re doing, Smith? Interfering with a murder suspect? Just because your great-grandfather was one of the founders—”

Smith straightened her shoulders and gazed straight into his bulging eyes. Her chin may have quivered a bit, but her voice was firm as she gently set him in his place.

“A report just came in that involves your suspect. There’s a 10-62 at 115 Watson Lane.”

“That’s my house.” My throat caught, roughening my voice. What was going on? Squinty glared at me but I didn’t care, someone broke into Bee’s house.

MacGuinty finally looked at Officer Smith. “Anyone on scene?”

She nodded, “Two officers on-scene, but the intruder is—” She glanced at me.

Squinty glared at me and dragged Smith out into the hall, slamming the door after him.

Now I worried that it might be Karey and Robert again. Or Robert and Eddie, or maybe Elliot. Oh hell, I was sure it was Robert. And there was nothing I could do, a neighbor must have called 9-1-1. It was out of my hands.

This would destroy Karey and any chance of making up with my mother. She would never believe it wasn’t my fault. I could strangle the little shit.

After a minute or two, MacGuinty came back, red in the face and somehow worried at the same time.

“How did you do it?”

“How did I do what?”

The lines of his face creased like fissures in rock.

“How did you arrange to have that dump broken into? It won’t work; you’re still my top suspect.”

I didn’t know whether to laugh or scream, so I did neither. I got really calm.

“Offic-Detective MacGuinty, I didn’t break into my own house. I’ve been here for the past hour and you have my phone, so how could I arrange anything? And why would I, it’s my house! Anything I want, I can just go get. My keys were stolen, probably by my nephew Robert at breakfast.
